Civil war in 1930s Spain stirred deep passions fervent commitment to ideals aroused ardent loves and hatreds. Volunteers arrived in the midst of this turmoil from all parts of the world to join the International Brigades and support the Spanish Republic, many with the cause of freedom burning in their hearts, some with faith in a political system, others, with a wish to help ease the sufferings of those wounded in the conflict. Amongst the volunteers are three young women, as different in character as they are in social class. This novel follows them through the hopes and horrors of war; the challenges and choices, the friendships that are forged and the emotional relationships with the uniquely disparate men they meet. The story both starts and ends 60 years after the war, revealing exactly how these events changed each imperfect individual.

I am half Spanish, with a home in the Ebro area, right in the midst of where the final battles were fought. The people in the pueblo with direct experience may be gone now, but they live vividly in the accounts passed down in the families, in the stories told and re-told with passion. This book brought that same intensity of raw reality, fervent commitment, joy and agony, all wrapped up in impeccably researched history. The writing is fluent, with a masterful use of language that draws the reader in to a place of empathy and understanding. The lives, emotions and reactions of the primary female characters are in no way stereotyped, but rather explored in their development in a manner that is multifaceted and believable. Truly a book I would recommend to any reader whether or not they know anything of the Spanish Civil War.Product details

Warm Earth edition by Angela Jackson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The novel Warm Earth, by historian Angela Jackson, is a deeply moving new account of the Spanish Civil War. Captivating and beautifully written, it sweeps the reader along in a whirlwind of inspiring and dramatic historic events that will forever change the lives of its protagonists, and history.
Jackson draws her readers into the diverse lives of three compelling young women, two British and one American-born, who volunteer to aid the Spanish Republic against Franco's 1930s insurgency. Constance and Rose work as nurses struggling to save wounded soldiers, while Addie lends her fundraising talents to the anti-fascist cause, broadcasting impassioned radio appeals from Madrid and delivering supplies to the front.
Real life Spanish Civil War volunteers, interviewed by Jackson for her previous nonfiction books, inspired the three fictional women and another key character, a Lincoln Battalion commander from Brooklyn. Ernest Hemingway also makes a particularly well-portrayed appearance, inviting Jackson's heroines to join a lively discussion at his Hotel Gran Via table.
Warm Earth's simple beginning belies the maelstrom of significant events to follow, moments of tragedy and hope that keep the pages turning faster and faster to the novel's bittersweet conclusion. Perhaps it is precisely because this historical fiction is about women, and written by a woman, that Warm Earth achieves an emotional complexity and attention to detail rarely found in other popular chronicles of the Spanish Civil War.
Warm Earth's readers close the book having lived in Spain, loved in Spain, and lost almost everything in Spain. The reader is left mesmerized and exhausted -- yet ready to search out the next Good Fight, wherever it may be in the world, and enlist.
Superb story of three amazing women. Different backgrounds and personalities who fight fascism in Spain and after. Survival, love, sunshine
Historically believable.
This was a fascinating book that I have already recommended to others. As I was reading it, I realized that it had to be based on true stories. There was so much detail! So I looked up the author and discovered that she is now a recognized historian and scholarly authority on the involvement of British volunteers especially nurses in Spain fighting against Franco. I also discovered that this book was based on actually people and at the end of the story the author weaves herself into the story. I highly recommend this book. My only caution is that there is no sugar-coating of the extreme hardships the nurses faced or the graphic realities of the surgeries or wounds they tried to heal.
