When cricketers from former British colonies come to America, they yearn to play their national sport. But first they must get past wives who think it’s time the men grew up and began accompanying them to religious services on weekends, as well as the Little League baseball organization with whom they must compete for use of the field. Trinidad native Freddie Watkins is determined to overcome these challenges on behalf of his immigrant community – at the risk of jeopardizing his own marriage.
Watkins at Bat Sticky Wicket Trilogy Vol I a Cricket Novel new edition Volume 1 Ewart Rouse 9781517253974 Books
Playing cricket in the United States presents unique obstacles not faced by cricketers in more established cricketing countries. I enjoy cricket in the Triangle Cricket League in North Carolina, and understand well the tremendous work required to organize a match, much more a league. Even obtaining a field and equipment have to be done from scratch, and recruiting players isn't always easy, either. North Carolina is not the same as the Metropolitan New York region in which Ewart Rouse played cricket and set his Sticky Wicket novels, but still there is a legion of problems similar for anyone trying to organize cricket in the US. Rouse deals with these problems with good humor, but keeps his characters real and life-like. I frequently nodded my head in agreement, noting the similarities of some of his characters to cricketers I have known. I love good cricket fiction, but it is even more fun to read good cricket fiction set in the US. I highly recommend these humorous and interesting stories to anyone who is interested in the subject matter. I enjoyed this updated edition even more than the original.Product details

Watkins at Bat Sticky Wicket Trilogy Vol I a Cricket Novel new edition Volume 1 Ewart Rouse 9781517253974 Books Reviews
Watkins At Bat is an entertaining romp with a motley cast of characters by an author whose love of the game of cricket is evident on every page. A wonderful adventure!
In Watkins at Bat, Rouse provides a finely crafted story of cricket adventure and the perseverance and antics it takes to stay the course of one's passion at any cost. The dedication Watkins has, and the lengths he goes to hold onto a something so meaningful in his heart - a game of his childhood memory and country - is compelling and inspiring. Rouse weaves a cast of diverse, humorous if not audacious characters bonding them together in the fun and fight to hold onto a not so mainstream sport. Their skillful and sneaky antics brought a smile to my lips and left me cheering them on and wanting more. -J.M. Scharff
