Although this short story is categorized for young adults, I am certain it will appeal to many baby boomers like me. From the moment I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire, I couldn't stop reading. Author Phyllis Zimbler Miller has a gift of putting the reader right into the middle of the story.

"Pinky Swear" will appeal to military brats of all ages as well as civilians who've always wondered what it would be like to live on a military installation with all the rigid rules that go along with rank. Back in 1964, when this story takes place, officers' kids and kids of NCOs seldom socialized outside of school. Throw in race issues and you've got a great story.

The author has a gift of gaining reader empathy with each one of her characters. Just when you want to judge some of the characters, the author turns the table and shows us their vulnerable sides.

Pinky Swear A YA Short Story edition by P Z Miller Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

P. Z. Miller has a wonderful gift of bringing her readers into a story, keeping them there, and engaging them with each of the characters. Like all good YA novels, Pinky Swear caught my attention from the first word, kept me in until the end, and left me wanting to know what happened to these kids as their stories played out. After all, this was during the Vietnam war when fathers and sons were sent to Vietnam, some never to return alive, and others to return damaged. I look forward to reading more about these kids and their parents. If you or your teenager are looking for a really good read, pick up a copy of this short story and recommend it to friends.
As always, Phyllis Zimbler Miller does not disappoint the reader! She certainly has a gift for bringing important issues to life through the medium of a good story.

In this young adult short story, Pinky Swear, she has remained true to form. Her story about the lives of military families and their teenage children during the Vietnam era captures the reader's attention from the very first page. Her true to life mix of vivid descriptions, strong characters, and heart-wrenching circumstances make this story a must-read. Although the story is fiction, her depiction of that troubling era with war, prejudice, and tragic circumstances is all too real. Whether your background is military or not, Miller's story will open your eyes and touch your heart!

*Be sure to check out all of P.Z. Miller's other books, especially "Mrs. Lieutenant" which continues the story of "Pinky Swear."
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a military child living on an installation, in the 60's, no less, look no farther than "Pinky Swear," by Phyllis Zimbler Miller. This short story is listed as being for young adults, but even older adults, especially those who came of age during the 60's, will relate to it. The drama of bonding with female friends, sneaking behind the backs of overly protective parents, and boy-meeting-girl, is the usual stuff that the teen are made of; add rank- and race-prejudice to the mix, and there you have the ultimate baby-boomer military-brat story. "Pinky Swear" is the pre-quel to the author's famous novel, "Mrs. Lieutenant," which, although written in the time frame of the Vietnam War, is timely today because prejudice is still very much alive and well. Read both!
